Abstract

ABSTRACT

This article presents the study result of mourning and melancholia conditions of the character presented in Billie Eilish’s album. This research aims to reveal the connotative and denotative meaning presented in selected songs in Billie Eilish’s album namely, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019). The method applied in this research is a qualitative approach using Sigmund Freud's mourning and melancholia theory and Roland Barthé's Connotative and Denotative theory. The result of the study showed that mourning and melancholia condition experienced by the character in the songs reflected the heartbreak and suicide.
