يتصور كثير من اللغويين اللغات على أنها مجموعة من الأبعاد أو الامتدادات التي يوجد معظمها بصورة مشتركة في اللغات. و من اللغويين من سار خطوة إلى الأمام فحاول حصر هذه الأبعاد أو الامتدادات، أو ما سماه بالمجالات أو الحقول الدلالية عن طريق تصنيفات عامة قام بها. و قد قدم هؤلاء تصنيفهم العام للموجودات في العالم من حولنا، و أقاموه على أساس من الوظيفة، أو الحجم، أو الشكل، أو اللون. و هم بعد مناداتهم بوجود أطر من المفاهيم العالمية المشتركة بين لغات البشر يعترفون بأن اللغات تختلف في الاختيار من بين هذه المجموعات و في التصنيف الجزئي داخل كل مجموعة
